An Individual Course Reflection
Poverty is an epidemic that affects millions across the world. It is something seen in everyday life, no matter where you are or social status. But the complication lies with the fact that we are uneducated in how to solve this problem. Through this project, I was able to learn so much about poverty and the small concepts the play into it.
The reason I decided to choose poverty as my social justice issue was due to the fact of the rising rates in which poverty is sweeping the country. It affects so many people throughout the world and specifically has affect my life. I have struggled with the outcomes of poverty for a long time. This stems from childhood relations and experiences that many are facing today. The flash memoir published in this magazine is just one of the minimal experiences that has impacted my life, dealing with poverty. There are many more people like me with that kind of knowledge of the struggles faced with everyday life when dealing with food insecurity, poverty and low circumstances. Everyone sees it, and many live it. That is why this subject is so important. It is everywhere around us, how do we help?
Poverty is something that comes with a lot of background. There are many people out there doing their own personal research to help fight the pressures of poverty, as well as major corporations and non-profits. Through this I was able to read and study a lot of material for my writing. This ranged from personal interviews, documentaries, articles and books. I learned that there is an endless amount of information out there, you just need to find the time to look. Within the english course, I was also able to learn how to filter out those kind of materials relevant and non-relevant to my writing. The internet is full of information that is not accurate. It is a very good skill to be able to tell the difference between the two types of data. Being able to correctly cite and use sources is a big step as well. This is highly necessary to have success with any writing material that you may be doing. Writing is always evolving and you need to be able to filter the good and cite it the way it should be. These are all skills I was able to learn while researching throughout the semester.
